The Twenty-Six were executed.
The first martyr was a twenty-four-year old Mexican Br. Philip. He didn’t have any ideas to come to Japan at all. Only because the ship to come back to Mexico was shipwrecked, he was drifted to Japan. It was said that he was added to martyrs. But, he bore this cross with joy and thanksgiving that he was chosen by the Lord.
At first he was pierced with spears to execute.
Then, the last was Father Peter Baptist the leader of the Twenty-Six.
Officers made him the last because they thought this father would give up his faith in God if he watch his companions were suffered and killed one after another.
But, Father Peter Baptist wanted to watch all members would love the Lord to their last and keep their faith to martyr.
Then, as he had desired, he received spears at last the twenty-sixth after watching all members returned to heaven with joy.
His last prayer is the same as one of the Lord on the cross, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ”
